“This is the simplest form of myself. I look in the mirror
and it’s like, ‘Hey, there you go. What’s up, girl?’ For me, hair is an
accoutrement. Hair is jewelry. It’s an accessory. Tomorrow I may want a
wig down to my butt and I’m gonna rock it, and the next day I may want a
big Afro and I’m gonna rock that too…”—Jill Scott
"Jill
Scott has much to be excited about these days. After a tumultuous few
years that saw the end of her first marriage, a broken engagement to her
son’s father, an acrimonious split from her longtime record label
Hidden Beach and the abrupt end of her HBO series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,
life is looking up for the singer. She’s a mother and a maverick; she’s
starring in a TV movie — Lifetime’s all-Black revamp of the 1980’s
classic Steel Magnolias — and she’s still packing in crowds on tour. Here, the soulful songstress—rocking a close-cropped natural for the October issue cover—talks to ESSENCE about “the lights coming on” after turning 40, finding her stride… and what’s next on the horizon."
Be sure to pick-up this issue and order a subscription! Jill Scott is a national treasure and so relatable to many women who don't fit into narrow ideals of beauty while being simply gorgeous, curves and all, natural hair or weaved, she's undeniably an immense talent and an incredibly beautiful woman!

Sunday Best...Wedding Songs and Special Performance by Jill Scott
With today's music, we can almost forget what it feels like to be truly moved by music in an old school manner. Gospel music is bigger than ever with so many different expressions. BET (Black Entertainment Television) has done a great job in bringing an American Idol-like program for the gospel genre where big dreams do come true with a panel of some of Gospel's most revered artists, Mary Mary and Donnie McClurkin.
This episode starts off with a lovely duet, The Prayer with Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin. These two have a musical marriage made in heaven!
Gospel singing extraordinaire, Kim Burrell is a top notch vocal mentor as she prepares contestants for their "wedding songs" and do they deliver, see for yourself!
Jill Scott set the stage ablaze with her beautiful rendition of "God Hear My Cry" from her latest album, The Light of The Sun. Enjoy this beautiful soul-stirring performance!
